After-sun Aromatherapy Blend

Summer weather was delayed for western Canada this year, but now that it has arrived,  I thought a blend to help replenish dry, sun-drenched skin would be appreciated.

I am not a big fan of sunscreen because I don’t trust the chemicals that it contains. Living on a boat and boating in general, exposes you to a lot of sun. I limit my exposure to the sun by covering up with clothing (this has not been a hardship this summer) and by avoiding being in the sun during the hottest part of the day. When I have to be in the sun for a long time, I wear sun protective clothing and only use sun screen when I have no other options available to me. I always wash the sunscreen off when I no longer need it – I hate the stuff.

Lavender is the essential oil of choice for burns to the skin and is therefore, an important ingredient in an after-sun aromatherapy blend.

After-sun Blend

  • Lavender (Lavandula Augustifolia) – 4 drops
  • Neroli (Citrus Aurantium Var. Amara) – 3 drops
  • Geranium (Pelargonium Graveolens) – 2 drops
  • Roman Chamomile (Chamameleum Nobilis) – 2 drops
  • Yarrow (Achillea Millefolium) – 2 drops
  • Tea Tree (Melaleuca Alternifolia) – 1 drop

in 30 mls carrier oil, lotion or gel. If possible add aloe vera gel and/or calendula infused oil to the carrier oil.

Moisturizing Face Blend

In a 30 mls container, blend the essential oils of:

  • Neroli (Neroli sur fleurs) – 3 drops
  • Lavender (Lavendula augustifolia) – 3 drops
  • Rose (Rosa  damascena) – 3 drops
  • Jasmine (Jasmine grandiflorium) – 3 drops
  • Violet Leaf (Viola odorata) – 1 drop
  • Carrot Seed (Daucus carota) – 1 drop.

Add: Calendula Face cream in small quantities, mixing after each addition until the jar is full. Store in a cool place away from sunlight because sunlight will make the oils go rancid.

Jasmine and Rose are very expensive essential oils so I purchase a diluted blend in jojoba oil called Jasmine 10% and Rose 10%. Neroli sur Fleurs is also a less expensive version of Neroli. All of these oils and the Calendula Face Cream are available from Rae Dunphy in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

Creamsicle blend

This is one of my favourite blends for a hand lotion. The combination of essential oils creates a divine aroma which is calming as well as being lovely for the hands.

Blend essential oils of:

Roman chamomile
  • Orange (Citrus sinensis) – 4-5 drops
  • Marjoram (Origanum marjorana) – 2 drops
  • Roman chamomile (Anthemis nobilis) – 2 drops
  • Benzoin (Styraz benzoin)- 4 drops

in 1 ounce of jojoba oil. Blend well. Add 30 mls unscented hand and body lotion to the mixture. Blend well.

You can purchase unscented hand and body lotion from Green Valley Aromatherapy or from Rae Dunphy. I have been a customer of these Canadian essential oil suppliers for over 10 years. They offer terrific customer service as well as quality products shipped anywhere in the world.
