As I was walking to work this morning and saying hello to people walking their dogs, I got to missing my two dogs – both long gone. Their passing is commemorated on our calendar with the number of years that we lost them on the sad day that they died – the number of years that we have mourned their loss.
Our calendar is also marked with the passing of other loved ones – an aunt, a brother-in-law, a friend, my father. Our calendar used to be a celebration of birthdays and anniversaries, but it is slowly being overtaken by reminders of loved ones lost. The subtle shift of my calendar from celebrating the birth of friends and family to now recording their deaths.
Aging is a funny thing; you don’t really feel any different inside, but you can be sure that the scorekeeper is watching the clock. Best to keep your heart and head in the game while you can.
